Possession of a valid drivers
license allows the bearer to operate (drive) a vehicle such as a motorcycle,
keke, car, bus, or a truck on a Nigerian roadway. Nigerian drivers license can
also serve for other purposes as it can be used as a means of identity to the bearer
when need be.
This is totally true because it contains
almost all the necessary
biometric information of the bearer. Before now, getting a new drivers license
in Nigeria was such a prodigious task but due to the ingenuity of the Federal
Road Safety Corp (FRSC), the journey has been a bit hassle free. Bellow is the step-by-stepprocedure you will take to
register and obtain your new drivers license in Nigeria. The application
procedure depends on the category of the applicant, i.e., A new applicant who
did not collect their drivers license before and old applicants who want
to renew their drivers lecense due to its expiration.
Category A: New
or Fresh Applicants:
Step 1: Attend a
Driving School and Get Certified by VIO: VIO is an abbreviation that stands for Vehicle
Inspection Office. Nigerians drivers license performs several roles. Apart
from acting as a warrant for road users and medium of identity, it also
certifies the bearer that he has been trained to drive. Getting enrolled in an accredited driving school is the most
effective and convenient way to getting a driver's license here in Nigeria. At
completion of the required programme of study, the driving school will then
present you to the vehicle inspection office (VIO) for a driving test.
This is very is a very
important step in the process of getting a new drivers license in Nigeria
because the VIO will ensure that you have undergone due training before
certification. According to Official Vehicle inspection Office website, “it is
an offense to produce or obtain a Nigerian Drivers License without being
certified competent by the VIO. Having passed the test, you will be given
a certificate
of proficiency form the VIO. Now, you are done with this step. Are you
ready to proceed?
Step 2: Collection of
Registration form for Drivers License:
With your certificate of proficiency in driving offered by the VIO, proceed
with the licensing website and print out the
registration form and bank teller or go in person to the drivers License Centre
(DLC) to obtain the form and the bank teller.
Step 3: Payment: With the bank teller, proceed
to the participating banks and make the necessary fee payment. At the time of
writing this article, the amount for the new drivers license is about N6, 000
or so. You will definitely confirm the amount at the point of form and teller
collection.
Step 4: Form
Endorsement:
Still at the DLC, present your duly completed forms and the bank teller to the
Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) desk and Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) for
necessary endorsement.
Step 5: Biometric
Capture: Still
at the DLC, visit the Federal Road Safety Corp desk. Here they will capture
your passport and fingerprint (thumbprint).
Step 6: Obtain a
Temporary Drivers License:
Upon successful completion of these steps, you will be given a temporary
driver's license which will be valid for 60 days from the day of collection.
After 60 days, your new drivers license would have been ready for collection.
Category B:
Drivers License Renewal:
May be your drivers license has
expired and you will want to apply for renewal please follows from step 2 to
step 6 as discussed above
Remember, as speculated, you
might be required to present your valid tax identificationnumber TIN to
be able to register for your driver’s license in Nigeria.
